The Carolina Panthers, a professional American football team is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They currently are the members of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Panthers, along with Jacksonville Jaguars joined the NFL as 1995 expansion teams and entered the NFL as the first expansion teams in almost 20 years. The second year of their existence in 1996, the Panthers found themselves in the NFC title game, playing the Green Bay Packers but lost. The Panthers became the youngest franchise to ever win a division title during that season beating out the San Francisco 49ers to take the NFC West. The next few years, the Panthers made as much news off the field as on, much of it negative. The Panthers set a rather dubious record by becoming the first NFL team to lose 15 straight games in one season in 2001. They picked up an encouraging win against the Minnesota Vikings to start the season.
The team returned to the NFC championship, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles to earn a trip to Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas in 2003. The team fell in that game to the AFC champion New England Patriots, 32-29, following a field goal with :04 remaining by Patriot kicker Adam Vinatieri. The Panthers sustained a number of injuries to key players early in the 2004 campaign. A loss to the Atlanta Falcons in week 15 and a loss to the New Orleans Saints in the final game of the season combined to keep the defending NFC Champion Carolina Panthers out of the playoffs.
During the 2003 season started the Panthers had drafted several young prospects, including Ricky Manning, Jr. out of UCLA at corner back, and Jordan Gross at offensive tackle.
Super Bowl XXXVIII is remembered more for the Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime Show with Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction", but football fans will definitely agree the game to be one of the best played games in Super Bowl history. The first quarter was scoreless, and neither team scored until near the end of the first half. Yet 24 points were scored in the last 5 minutes of the first half, and the score going into halftime was 14-10 New England. The third quarter was as scoreless as the first, and it wasn't until late in the game that things heated up once again. The teams traded leads numerous times in the highest-scoring fourth quarter in Super Bowl history.
In 2003 he team returned to the NFC championship, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles to earn a trip to Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas. In the early 2004 campaign, the Panthers sustained a number of injuries to key players. A loss to the Atlanta Falcons in week 15 and a loss to the New Orleans Saints in the final game of the season combined to keep the defending NFC Champion Carolina Panthers out of the playoffs.
