The glorious days of the Cowboys began to fade as free agency and injuries took their toll. Jerry Jones was blamed by many fans and media for the team's ill which he proved to be wrong in 2003 when Cowboys became a surprise team of the 2003 season. The 2004 season was one of turmoil since injuries and persistent penalty problems hobbled the Cowboys.
