New York Giants, a professional American football team is based in the New York City metropolitan area. The team is headquartered, trains, and plays its home games at Giants Stadium at the Meadowland Sports Complex in the suburb of East Rutherford, New Jersey. Now members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), the Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925. But only one admitted that year exists. The Giants have won four NFL Championships and two Super Bowls.
The football team was referred to as the New York Football Giants inorder to distinguish itself from the professional baseball team of the same name. Although the baseball team moved to San Francisco in 1957, the football team continued to use "New York Football Giants" as its legal corporate name.The team defeated the Chicago Bears 30-13 at the Polo Grounds in icy nine degree temperatures in 1934. The game came to be known as the "Sneakers Game" when Coach Steve Owen provided the team with basketball shoes for better traction on the icy turf.
"The Greatest Game Ever Played" which came to be known was in 1958 when the Giants played the Baltimore Colts for the NFL championship. The Giants team began the recent football tradition to douse the head coach with a cooler of ice cold water near the end of a victorious game that clinched some sort of championship.
The Mara family sold a 50% interest in the team to Preston Robert Tisch in 1990. The Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV 20-19 in 1991, one of the most dramatic Super Bowls ever played. The Giants were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV by the score of 34-7 in 2001. Head coach Jim Fassel was fired in 2001 after a 4-12 season and Tom Coughlin was signed to that position.
