The Philadelphia Eagles, a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are currently the members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team has won three NFL titles and has two Super Bowl appearances and is regarded as a second incarnation of the defunct NFL team Frankford Yellow Jackets. Philadelphia's representative in the National Football League in 1931, the Frankford Yellow Jackets, went bankrupt and ceased operations midway through the season. The NFL awarded its dormant Philadelphia franchise to a syndicate headed by former Yellow Jackets owners Bert Bell and Lud Wray for an entry fee of $2,500.

The Eagles struggled during their first decade due to repeated losing seasons. The team temporarily merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers to form a team known as "the Phil-Pitt Steagles".The Eagles did not qualify for the post season again until the late 1970s-early 1980s when head coach Dick Vermeil and quarterback Ron Jaworski led the team to four consecutive playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl XV loss to the Oakland Raiders. Philadelphia struggled throughout the mid-1980s. Yet they qualified from 1888 to 1996 for the play offs during 6 out of those 9 seasons. The Eagles hired head coach Andy Reid in 1999 and drafted quarterback Donovan McNabb. Under Reid and McNabb, the team played in four consecutive conference championship games between 2001 and 2004.Bert Bell and Lud Wray, co-owners of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, an inactive NFL franchise since midway through the 1931 season, were granted permission to reactivate the club on July 9, 1933, under a new name, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Neither the Eagles nor the NFL officially regards the two franchises as the same, citing the aforementioned period of dormancy; however, some observers believe the two teams should be treated as one. The Eagles became the first NFL team since 1975 to rank first in the league in both rushing and passing yardage allowed in 1991 but neglected to reach the playoffs despite a 10-6 final record. Their next period of prominence came under the tutelage of head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Donovan McNabb. They became the first team in modern history to get that far in the post season after having been shut out at home in its first game.

The 2004 season began with a bang as Owens caught three touchdown passes from McNabb in their season opener against the New York Giants. The Eagles defeated the Atlanta Falcons 27-10 on January 23, 2005 in the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia, to advance to the Super Bowl XXXIX, where they were defeated by the New England Patriots, 24-21. Philadelphia Eagles fans are considered to be among the most hostile and violent in professional sports. From 2000 through 2004, all inclusive, the Eagles actually had a better record in regular-season away games than in home games, going 31-9 on the road but only 28-12 at home.
