The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida and currently members of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Along with the Seattle Seahawks, this team joined the NFL as 1976 expansion teams. The club currently owned by Malcolm Glazer is coached by head coach Jon Gruden. After the Bucs lost their first 26 games in franchise history they historically cameto be known as chronic loser. The team suffered through 14 straight losing seasons after a brief winning era in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They have however been a contender for most of the last decade and at the end of the 2002 season won Super Bowl XXXVII.

Nicknamed "Bucco Bruce", Bucs logo (1976-1996) started out in AFC West in 1976 moving to NFC Central in 1977. The club could not win a game in which the temperature at kickoff time was below 40°F till the last week of the 2002 regular season. They have consecutively lost 20 such games prior. They are also known to have once lost 27 consecutive games played both outdoors and on artificial turf. This streak begun after a victory over the Bengals at Cincinnati in the 1980 season opener and lasted till they defeated the Eagles in Philadelphia on the first week of the 1995 season. The Buccaneers lost around ten games in 17 of their first 21 seasons, including 12 straight from 1983 to 1994. Apart from their poor performance the team's bright creamsicle uniform and logo were often mocked. The team was sold by original owner Hugh Culverhouse to the Glazer family in the mid 1990s whose financial support allowed them to finally become competitive.

The Bucs moved into new NFC South division, along with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints with league realignment in 2002. The 2002 Buccaneers are known to be the first team ever to win the Super Bowl after not having made selections in either of the first two rounds of the previous spring's college draft. It became the first team ever to win the Super Bowl after having lost at home on opening day and after having gained less than 100 yards rushing per game during the regular season. It also became the first team ever to win the Super Bowl after having been eliminated in the wild-card round of the prior season's playoffs.

The 2003 season proved to be a losing one for the Buccaneers. In the 2004 season, the Bucs started out 1-5 after trading away two of their best defensive players and one offensive player after deactivating him ten games into the 2003 season. Another interesting fact to demonstrate the team's losing history is that it is the only NFL team to have never run back a kickoff for a touchdown in the regular season. They have received over 1,500 kickoffs in their nearly three-decade history but none of them have been taken back for a touchdown.
