FBR Open is the most liked and favored golf tournament conducted by PGA. It is held at Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale, Arizona around the last weekend in January. Earlier it was known by Arizona Open & Phoenix Open .Its name was changed to FBR Open after getting sponsorship by the investment bank, Friedman Billings Ramsey, in 2003. It is known as the best attended gold event. Last year it was attended by approx. 500,000 people. FBR Open is nationally telecasted golf event which features all experts and professional of golf.
Started in 1932, The phoenix open ran for 3 years but stopped in 1935. It again reformed after the efforts of a dedicated golfer, Bob Goldwater Sr. convinced fellow Thunderbirds into running the event. Bob didn't get much enthusiasm from the Thunderbirds about running the event. The event was played at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona and later alternated by The Arizona Country Club formed in 1955. This arrangement lasted until Phoenix Country Club took The Arizona Country Club's turn in 1975 and became the event's permanent home again. In 1987 the tournament was started in TPC of Scottsdale's Stadium Course.
The total payout of $3000 in 1939 has increased to $ 400,000 today. The winner of the tournament receives 18% of the money that is the standard winner's share on the PGA Tour. The champion for 2006 is J.B. Holmes. Other famous winners include Phil Mickelson in 2005 and 1996, Vijay Singh in 2003 and 1995, Chris DiMarco in 2002, and Mark Calcavecchia in 2001, 1992, and 1989.
Various records of the FBR Open include the lowest 4-day score (72 holes) by Mark Calcavecchia in 2001 with a total score of 256, which was an incredible 28 under par. His score was 60 on One of the days, which was the lowest score in the history of the Phoenix Open equivalent with Grant Waite in 1996. Calcavecchia had 32 birdies in the tournament, which was also an all-time record. He became a three 3-time winners of the Phoenix Open other than Gene Littler, Arnold Palmer. There has been only one double eagle in the history of the Phoenix Open, by Tom Pernice Jr. on the 15th hole in 1990.
The 4th attendance is very heavy because of the favorite watch, the 16th hole due to the "Amphitheatre" atmosphere of the hole which is created by the stands erected every year before the tournament. Poor shots at the 16th hole receive yells and shouts whereas Good shots are cheered for loudly. Famous moments at the 16th include Tiger Woods' hole-in-one in 1997, which made the crowd broke out because of celebration and Justin Leonard giving the finger to the gallery after a poor shot. Phil Mickelson, an Arizona State alum has been the most efficient and famous golfer. Along with tournament, another event in form of a concert is held in which artists like Huey Lewis and the News play.
FBR Open has achieved a legendary status in PGA Tour. It is best opportunity to see the golf experts performing live at television. The 2007 event will mark the 72 nd playing of the Open, and the fourth as the FBR Open, making it one of the five oldest events on the PGA Tour. It will be held at the TPC in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 29th through February 4th 2007.
