The tournament was earlier not called the FedEx St. Jude Classic. The tournament was originally founded in 1958 and was known as thh Memphis Open. Until 1989, the tournament was annually held at Colonial Country Club situated in Cordova, Tennessee. In 1969, actor Danny Thomas lent his name to the tournament as his St. Jude Hospital become the tournament's charity. Accordingly, the name of the tournament was changed to the Danny Thomas Classic from the following year onwards. In 1977, President Gerald Ford, hit a hole-in-one in the tournament's Celebrity Pro-Am. The same year, Al Geiberger booked a record 59 (13-under-par) round. In 1989, the event moved to its current location.

The first winner of the Memphis Open was Billy Maxwell (1958). Don Whitt got the playoff in 1959. On September 13, 2005 Reggie Barnes, the long-time Memphis sports leader was elected the general chairman of FedEx St. Jude Classic as well president of Youth Programs, Inc. which is the governing body of the PGA Tour event. Reggie Barnes has succeeded Grattan Brown who had been the chairman of FedEx St. Jude Classic since 1997. "I have decided to step down as president and general chairman," Brown said. "It has been my pleasure to fill these roles since 1997. Although I will no longer be the tournament's general chairman, I look forward to continuing to serve as a volunteer member of the Youth Programs, Inc., board of directors"-Brown added.
