When it comes to cutting edge hockey, many people might say that California is a pretty unlikely place to find a good hockey team. People might also say that a team that calls itself the Ducks is probably one that is probably a little mixed up. Well there's a good chance that those people were never lucky enough to get tickets to see the Anaheim Ducks play some live hockey on the rinks. The Ducks has established themselves as a strong team to contend with in a remarkably short time and has proven that they are not a team to be taken lightly.
The Ducks are based in Anaheim, California and have the team colors of black, gold and orange. Their mascot is a duck called Wild Wing and their rival teams are the Edmonton Oilers, The Los Angeles Kings, The Calgary Flames, The San Jose Sharks, The Dallas Stars and the Phoenix Coyotes. The Ducks officially hit the ice in 1993- back then they were known as the Mighty Ducks. The team was originally owned by the Walt Disney Company and also has the distinction of being inspired by a movie. The name for the team was taken from the movie The Mighty Ducks, which is about a losing hockey team that turns itself around in the hands of a group of misfit teenagers. The movie was later made into a cartoon of the same name.
The Ducks got lucky with their very first draft pick when they chose Paul Kariya- Kariya would prove to be instrumental in building a solid reputation for the team as well as leading the Ducks to a close shave with a Stanley Cup win. Kariya would remain with the team until 2003 when he would sign off as a free agent.
For a team that had just entered the big leagues in 1993, the team made an impressive appearance in the '96-'97 playoffs when they crushed the Phoenix Coyotes in 7 games but where later defeated by the Detriot Redwings in the semi finals. During the '98-'99 season they made the playoffs again but were swept under by the Redwings in the quarterfinals. Their best play till date occurred in 2003 when they were one game away from the Stanley Cup.
The Ducks faced some rough weather the following year with labor disputes and Disney trying to sell the team. In 2005, the team was sold to a couple who promised to keep the team in Anaheim. A number of changes were made, including the drafting of some key players and changing the name to Anaheim Ducks.
