Ready to catch some hot thrashing action live on the hockey rink? Then you need to grab your tickets to see the Atlanta Thrashers take on the competition in some live hockey action. The Thrashers are among the newest teams in the NHL today but they are also one of the fastest movers, playing some superb hockey and giving Stanley Cup champion teams a real run for their money.
The Thrashers are based in Atlanta, Georgia and their team colors are navy blue, ice blue, red and gold. Their mascot is called Thrash. Their rival teams include the Carolina Hurricanes, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. The Thrashers are one of the new kids on the NHL block, entering the league in 1997 as a replacement franchise for the Flames that left Atlanta for Calgary in 1980. The name is taken from the Brown Thrasher which is the official state bird of Georgia. Though the team has yet to make it to the playoffs, they have showed consistent improvement year after year, playing their best hockey till date in the 2005-2006 season.
The Thrashers suffered a heavy blow in 2003 when one of their best forwards Dany Heatley accidentally crashed his car, killing fellow teammate Dan Snyder who was riding with him. Heatley was seriously injured and the loss of Snyder was keenly felt by the team, who dedicated that season to Snyder's memory and wore black patches in his honor. Heatley eventually returned to the ice but there was a great deal of animosity towards him which resulted in his eventual trade-off.
During the 2003-2004 season the Thrashers managed to play some amazing hockey, possibly spurred on by the memory of Snyder. They not only upset big teams like the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple leafs, they managed to end the season just a few wins away from the playoffs. The 2005-2006 season started on a low note, with one of their key players caught in a contract dispute and their goalie injured at the outset of the season. After 14 games into the season, the Thrashers were at a 4-10 record. However a number of power plays and the will to play better pushed the Thrashers to their most improved season yet. Though they did not make the playoffs this year, a number of important players have been signed on during the off-season which is bound to have a positive effect on the team.
