The Boston Bruins are based in Boston Massachusetts and have the team colors of black and gold. After much convincing by a Boston grocery magnate, the Bruins became the first American team to enter the NHL in 1924. They are named after the brown bear, which was thought to symbolize the speed, cunning and agility of a wild animal. Though they finished bottom of the barrel in their first season, they managed to improve enough to win the Stanley Cup in the 1928-1929 season. During the thirties they played some of their best hockey, helped by a winning line-up known as the Kraut Line and a fabulous goalie named Frank Brimsek. After winning the Cup again in the 1938-1939 season, the war began taking its toll on the Bruins.

By the fifties most of these stars returned but Brimsek in particular could not find his game. Despite strong fan support, the Bruins could not find their winning groove and it wouldn't be until 1964, with the addition of Bobby Orr to the team that things would turn around. By the seventies, the Bruins were back in form and known as the Big Bad Bruins who would bring the Stanley Cup home again in 1970.

The Bruins continued to play well into the eighties but by the late nineties and the new millennium, things began going south for the team. Despite having good regular seasons, they found it difficult to gain spots into the playoffs and had much trouble finding a good goalie. Things looked particularly bad in the 2005-2006 season when a number of new players were brought in who were often injured or failed to make the mark.
