It's time to get your tickets to see one of the most successful teams in the NHL take to the ice, a team that has weathered a fateful curse and raked in a number of championship wins over the years- it's time to get your tickets to see the Chicago Blackhawks do some damage on the ice.
The Blackhawks are based in Chicago and sport the team colors of red, black and white. Their mascot is Tommy the Hawk and they share rivalries with the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues. The Blackhawks are also one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team takes its name from Chief Black Hawk, who plays an important role in the history of Illinois.
The team is one of the first American teams in the NHL, joining in 1926. Their first season was a moderate success but in 1927 the team lost their first round in the playoffs, prompting the firing of the Coach Muldoon. Muldoon then went on to declare that the Blackhawks would never finish first and this became known as one of the most famous sports curses in history- Muldoon's Curse. Though it was later revealed to have been fabricated by a journalist, it is interesting to note that though the team would win the Stanley Cup three times, they would do so without coming first.
After pulling in a league-worst record in 1927-28, the team redeemed itself with its first Stanley Cup win in 1934. They would win again in 1938 but would also be the team with the poorest regular season record to win the Cup. In the fifties, the team not only faced financial difficulties but was playing poorly as well. It wouldn't be until 1961 that the team would make an impression once again by decimating Montreal with a killer defense.
In 1972, the team lost many of their best players after the WHA came into being. Ever since then the team has been a successful and consistent team till the finals after which the Blackhawks have been missing the finals sometimes by a margin as small as one point. By the late nineties the team seemed to be losing its grip and failed to make the playoffs altogether in 1998. Things went from bad to worse when in 2004 the team was voted worst franchise in professional sports by ESPN.
Perhaps that was the team's wake-up call- by 2006, the team began making some serious changes and trades, picking up some of the hottest talent in the league in order to boost the team's momentum. The Blackhawks now seem set to win back some of their past glory- make sure you're there to watch it happen.
