The Colorado Avalanche is currently based in Denver, Colorado and play in the team colors of silver, white, Air Force Blue and burgundy. Their traditional rivals are the Detroit Redwings and the Dallas Stars. The team began its career as the San Francisco Seahawks in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association. However, financial and arena problems forced the team to relocate to Quebec, where they became known as the Quebec Nordiques. The Nordiques were a pretty strong team on the ice but off the ice the team was again dogged by financial troubles. After the 1994-95 lockout, the team owner asked for a bail out for the team from the provincial government. The deal fell through however and the team was ultimately sold to investors in Colorado- the team shifted homes and changed their name yet again.

Despite having so many shifts in its career, the Avalanche greeted its first season with a killer line-up, despite the fact that Eric Lindros was drafted but later refused to play feeling that the Avalanche was an uncompetitive team. Some midseason trades turned the Avalanche into an unforeseen powerhouse- by 1995 the team had such an exemplary set of players, a healthy mix of veterans and hot talent that their Stanley Cup win that year was pretty much expected.

The team continued to be an incredibly strong team to contend with and soon they picked up Ray Bourque, a Hall of Famer who was looking for one more shot at the Stanley Cup. During the 2000-2001 season the Avalanche faced one of their most grueling sessions and finally overcame the New Jersey Devils in a series of seven hard-fought games. Though it is customary for the team captain to receive the Stanley Cup and do a victory lap with the Cup held above his head, that year captain Joe Sakic refused to take the Cup, insisting instead that Bourque lift it instead. This has been one of the classiest displays of sportsmanship in the NHL.

Though the recent salary cap has hit the Avalanche hard of late, it has also given the rookies and younger talents an opportunity to emerge and show their mettle.
