The final argument is that the term refers to the number of soldiers that Ohio sent during the Civil War, more than any other state. There is also an argument that the term refers to the Shawnee Leader Blue Jacket but the team itself has not used any kind of Native American references with regard to their name.

The Blue Jackets have yet to make the playoffs but they are still a very young team- they also have an incredibly strong core of young players who look ready to do some serious damage in the coming seasons. The Blue Jackets faced a terrible tragedy in 2002 when a young spectator named Brittanie Cecil was struck in the head and killed by a shot from Espen Knutsen.
