It's time to get in high gear and grab your tickets to see one of the hottest young teams on the ice this season- get your tickets to see the Columbus Blue Jackets live in action. These boys may be one of the youngest teams in the NHL today but they have managed to prove themselves as being more than up to the challenge of taking on the big kids when it comes to playing real hockey.
The Blue Jackets hail from Columbus Ohio and sport the colors Navy blue, red and white. Their mascot is a large green insect known as Stinger and their traditional rivals are the Detroit Redwings and the Nashville Predators. The team is a relatively new one, making its on-ice debut in 2000. Their very first game was against the Chicago Blackhawks, who ultimately won the match 5-3. The very first goal ever scored for the team was made by Bruce Gardiner.
The team's name has been the topic of much discussion and there are currently four different speculations as to how the name came about. Though the name was ultimately chosen by the fans, there are reports that the team owner's favorite color was blue and hence he insisted that the word blue be part of the name. There was also talk of having the theme of 'an insect with attitude' to be attributed to the team, thus playing on the name of yellowjackets. This may well hold true as there have been a number of hockey teams in Ohio before like the Toledo Hornets and the Cincinnati Stingers with insect names. The final argument is that the term refers to the number of soldiers that Ohio sent during the Civil War, more than any other state. There is also an argument that the term refers to the Shawnee Leader Blue Jacket but the team itself has not used any kind of Native American references with regard to their name.
The Blue Jackets have yet to make the playoffs but they are still a very young team- they also have an incredibly strong core of young players who look ready to do some serious damage in the coming seasons. Currently, players like Rick Nash, Gilbert Brule and Rostislav Klesla are some strong players to look out for. The Blue Jackets faced a terrible tragedy in 2002 when a young spectator named Brittanie Cecil was struck in the head and killed by a shot from Espen Knutsen. After this tragedy, all NHL arenas have nylon mesh installed behind the goals to prevent spectators from being injured.
After being hit by a rash of injuries last season, the Blue Jackets are all set to take the NHL by storm in the coming season. Make sure you are there to catch the action- get to your online ticket vendor now and order your tickets to see the Columbus Blue Jackets.
