Come get your tickets to see a team that once fielded the best hockey team in history and according to some experts, the best sports team in history. Come get your tickets to see the Edmonton Oilers play some live action hockey and be wowed by the strength of a powerhouse team that practically ruled the eighties with an iron fist.
The Oilers are based in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and sport the colors silver, copper, red, white and midnight blue. The team shares a number of rivalries, perhaps most notably with the Calgary Flames and of late with the Dallas Stars. The Oilers were the ultimate team in the eighties and pulled in five Stanley Cup wins during that decade as proof of their strength.
The Oilers began as a founding member of the WHA in 1972 as previous efforts to bring the NHL to Edmonton had failed. The team was originally called the Alberta Oilers as it was thought that the games would be split between Edmonton and Calgary. However due to a number of reasons it turned out that most of the games were played in Edmonton and hence the name was changed. The team did not begin brilliantly but had a very enthusiastic fan base that was extremely loyal.
Things changed drastically for the team when a young man called Wayne Gretzky was signed to the team for a nominal sum. He would prove to be one of the greatest players ever in the NHL and would play a huge role in turning the Oilers into a force to be reckoned with. In 1979-80 the team signed with the NHL and history was written as the Oilers went on to dominate for the next decade. Of the other teams that also joined the NHL at this time, only the Oilers have avoided relocation or renaming to this date.
The brilliance did not just lie with Gretzky- it was a sweet line up that consisted of names like Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Jari Kuri, Glen Anderson and Kevin Lowe that made the Oilers so successful. During the late eighties, the Oilers were at the pinnacle of their strength and are seen by many to be one of the greatest sporting teams in history.
After a dream run of sorts, things began to fall apart in 1988 when Gretzky was traded along with a number of other players. Not only were the majority of the team youngsters with little experience, the bigger players began leaving the team as well due to salary issues. It wouldn't be till 2006 that the Oilers would come roaring back into form reminiscent of the teams of old.Don't miss your chance to catch this team of champions when they hit the ice- get to your online ticket vendor now and order your tickets to see the Edmonton Oilers.
