The team was born in 1993 when the owner of Blockbuster Video won a bid to open an NHL franchise in Florida. Despite some initial reservations about the team, the Panthers managed to put out some notable hockey talent, with names such as John Vanbiesbrouck, Scott Mellanby and Rob Niedermayer gracing the roster.

Most expansion teams get off to a slow start, often ending up at the bottom of the barrel for a number of seasons before they can find their groove. But with the Panthers it was a different story. The team not only just missed a chance to battle it out in the playoffs they also finished the season one point below .500. This is an incredible feat, considering that this was the opening season for the team.

But the bar had been set. After seeing what the team was capable of, fans and administration alike decided that making the playoffs in 1994 was not an impossible task. Again, the team came close but didn't manage to clinch a spot. The coach was immediately fired and replaced and work began to push the Panthers to play their hardest.

In 1996 the Panthers had one of their best seasons yet, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals after knocking over powerhouse teams like the Boston Bruins, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The elation on the Florida side was huge. Not only had the Panthers made it to the finals, they had gone through some of the biggest teams on the circuit. Though they did not win, it was an important season nonetheless.

Unfortunately the following season found the team ravaged by injuries and consequently with their worst record till date. However the team has made a number of important acquisitions over the years that are sure to strengthen the team even further. With the Panthers building on their existing talent and pushing that extra mile, there is little doubt that these boys could well be walking away with the Cup next season.
