Grab your tickets to see a team that proved the entire professional hockey world wrong, a team that went from the very bottom of the barrel to multiple Stanley Cup Champions as well as the best defensive team in the NHL. Grab your tickets to see the New Jersey Devils play live. This team has firmly pulled itself up by its bootstraps, disregarding negative comments that were made about them and concentrating instead on improving their game. The result has been the emergence of one of the strongest teams in the NHL today.
The Devils are currently based in East Rutherford, New Jersey and sport the colors red, black and white. Their mascot is the legendary New Jersey Devil, an animal that is supposed to inhabit the Pine Barrens area. Their traditional rivals include the Ottawa Senators, the Philadelphia Flyers, the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers. The team originally began as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. As the Scouts the team did not fare very well and soon financial problems coupled with lackluster playing prompted them to move and become the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies were marginally better than the Scouts, starting off the season well but quickly losing momentum and ultimately winding up last at the end of the season. They managed to make the playoffs once after which it was a steady, downhill decline. In 1982 the team was purchased by a shipping tycoon in New Jersey and has been there ever since.
Though the Devils started out with a modest season, their 1983 season was worse, with things reaching the very pits when the team lost to the Oilers in a humiliating 13-4 defeat. Former Oilers player Ron Low was with the Devils at that time and The Great One Wayne Gretzky made a public statement expressing his disappointment, calling the Devils a Mickey Mouse team.
The improvement was slow but steady in coming. By the nineties, the team was strong enough to be a regular feature in the playoffs and was gaining respect in the NHL. By 1994 they had clinched their first Stanley Cup win, beating the Red Wings who were favored to win. The Devils would continue to make a strong impact, snagging the Cup time and again into the new millennium. For a team that had been written off as one of the worst in the league and been branded a Mickey Mouse team by one of the greats of hockey, the Devils have single-handedly turned it all around. They taste of victory was perhaps even sweeter when Gretzky would later announce that the Devils had become the best defensive team in the NHL.
