There are some teams that just don't seem to have any luck; that are dogged by financial troubles, bad trades and general lackluster playing that they find hard to shake. The Islanders are based in Uniondale, New York and wear the team colors of orange and dark blue. Their main rivals are the Philadelphia Flyers, the New Jersey Devils and especially the New York Rangers. The Islanders were founded in 1972, during the sticky politics that was happening between the WHA and the NHL. As a result of a couple of strings being pulled, NHL franchises were hastily given to both Long Island and Atlanta. It was thought that the Long Island team would take the name the Ducks, in keeping with the Eastern Hockey franchise league but for some reason the name Islanders was used instead. The season began roughly for the team, who had to shell out 4 million dollars to the New York Rangers as territorial fees. The team was young and inexperienced, having the distinction of being one of the worst in the NHL.

But a core of talent was being grown and by 1974, the Islanders had their last losing season for 15 years. By 1975 they had made one of the most extraordinary turnarounds in NHL history, earning themselves a playoff spot and holding their own against some of the toughest teams in the league. They began notching up 100 point seasons with ease and were running one of the best records in the NHL. However financial troubles were still dogging the team- it wouldn't be till the eighties that the Islanders would make a mark once again- this time, winning the Stanley Cup.

The Islanders went on to win the Cup four times in a row and win 10 playoff series consecutively. The nineties found the team struggling again with financial problems which were translating into poor performances on the ice. However, the Islanders have gone to great lengths in rebuilding their team of late and hope to make another Stanley Cup appearance this season.
