The Ottawa Senators are a very famous professional ice hockey team which is based at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It plays in the highly acclaimed National Hockey League (better known as NHL). The senators were founded in the year 1992-93 (they were however awarded their franchise on December 6, 1990). The teams playing arena is the famous Scotia bank Place which has a seating capacity of about 19,500. Its former home Arena was Ottawa Civic Centre (from 1992 till 1995). The official colors for the team are black, white and red. The logo design consists of a Roman legionnaire. The main rivals of the senators are touted as Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils etc. these all are occupants of the Northeast Division at the NHL. The senators are often nicknamed as "Sens" and their well known mascot is the Sparta cat.
One of the most popular and greatest teams of the early on years of hockey, the old Ottawa Senators existed from the years 1901 to 1934. They managed to win ten Stanley Cups in that period of time. The team eventually relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, and rechristened themselves as the St. Louis Eagles, but soon folded subsequent to the 1934-35 season.
The NHL had planned a major expansion in the year 1992 and this expansion had several strong contenders, but starting in the year 1989, the original owner Bruce Firestone put together a full of life bid to revitalize NHL hockey in the state of Ottawa. For this he used the last surviving original Senator, Frank Finnigan, as the public face. These revived Senators went on to win one of the two expansion slots (the other one being the Tampa Bay Lightning) and thus both began playing in the year 1992. In the season 1995-96, the Senators relocated to the Palladium (afterward known as Corel Centre, and presently known as Scotia bank Place) from the original Ottawa Civic Centre (which was in the nearby city of Kanata). This happened on January 15th 1996.
The new Senators played their first game in the Ottawa Civic Centre, it was a small arena going by professional standards, and could seat only 11,500. But they managed to beat the eventual Stanley Cup champion "Montreal Canadiens" by 5-3.
Two major proceedings occurred for the Senators in January 1996, firstly Jacques Martin became their head coach, secondly the team moved into their new arena, the Palladium in Kanata, a suburb of Ottawa, having a capacity of 18,500. This marked the launch of a remarkable franchise turn around.
This team has the record of having won 4 Division Championships (in the seasons 1998-99, 2000-01, 2002-03, and 2005-06) and the Presidents' Trophy once in 2002-03. With such a glorious history and hall of fame for the senators, no one would like to miss the match for anything. So book your tickets well in advance. Online booking is also open.
