The Philadelphia Flyers are a well known and renowned ice hockey team based at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The flyers play in the famous National Hockey League (NHL). They started playing in the season 1967-68, when the new expansion teams were vulnerable as a result of the restrictive rules that reserved all major talent with the Original Six. Although they struggled in their early phase, the Flyers proved by the early 1970s that they were well capable of challenging the Original Six. As the Flyers became the very first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup in the year 1973-74, Center forward Bobby Clarke and goal keeper Bernie Parent emerged as the flyer's first superstars. As many as seven players racked up more than 100 penalty minutes during the first Cup winning season. Later the flyers effectively defended their title in 1974-75 by defeating the tough team 'Buffalo Sabres'.
Even with the event of failing to get a third consecutive Stanley Cup in 1975-76 (they were beaten in the Finals by the Montreal Canadiens), the team was still victorious against their rivals the Soviet Union's dominated Central Red Army team in one of the most astonishing exhibition game held on January 11, 1976 at Philadelphia. They beat them 4-1. In the season 1979-80 they went undefeated for a record 35 straight games, for a North American professional sports (25-0-10), this record still stands to this day. The glory years and winning streak continued on and on.
The name Flyers was chosen to convey the activity and more so the excitement that was with both, hockey in general, and with the New Philadelphia club. The name was chosen as a part of a contest that was done by the management to get a new name. The name flyers beat many other names like Lancers, Royals, Raiders, Sabres, Huskies, Blizzards, Ice Caps, Knights, Ice Picks, and Greenbacks etc. The logo for flyers was a creation of famous artist Sam Ciccone. As with the name, the idea behind the logo was similar; to convey the activity and speed of hockey, and also referring to both the city and the sport. Thus Ciccone came up with the stylized P containing a bright orange hockey puck, and with four wings coming from the back. This logo served the purposes it was meant for.
The team has a record any team could envy on, namely the Stanley Cup twice, then the Prince of Wales Trophy three times, then the NHL League Championships nine times and many more to go on. Apart from these trophies there are many individual records of players, who are considered the best in their own respect. The team has the reputation of being a strong and enthusiastic team and thus no hockey lover would like to miss any of its matches. So book your tickets now! Online bookings also available.
