A small field of highly competitive drivers, some fancy footloose driving skill s, a large fat purse for the winner and thousands of enthralled fans cheering their favourites makes the Budweiser Shootout one of the most exciting motorsport events today. An annual event of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, Budweiser Shooutout attracts thousands of fans from across the country who come to see riveting motorsport action. With the event being held at the newly revamped Daytona International Speedway, with its unique fanzone area, the event will be one of the highpoint of the year's motorsport calendar. Enthusiasts descend at Daytona in droves lapping up tickets with rapidity and get prepared for an explosive ride.
Starting out in 1979 as Busch Clash, the event has already had several format changes and the current format ensures maximum enjoyment for the viewers and drivers. Made up of two segments, a 20-lap segment after which teams are given a ten minute intermission to perform pit-stop activities, and following it a 50-lap segment in which each car is required to make a green flag pit stop. The event is unique as there is no point system for the race with winners being awarded large cash awards. This guarantees a more action-paced and aggressive race with every team going all out to win. With a small select field consisting of previous Budweiser shootout winners and pole position winners of the previous season, the level of driving at the Shootout is a cut above the rest. Random draws decide the starting lineup leading to unpredictable results.Of the past dozen races most have been won by a margin of less than 0.3 seconds. Past winners have included six-time winner Dale Earnhardt (1980, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1995), Neil Bonnett (1983 and 1984), Ken Schrader (1989 and 1990), Dale Jarrett (1996, 2000 and 2004), Jeff Gordon (1994 and 1997), Tony Stewart (2001 and 2002) and current favourite Dale Earnhardt Jr (2003).
The 2006 Shootout was an action packed event with many firsts - the first time that a segment ended with a caution, the first green-white-checker Shootout at lap 72 and the first time that a rookie had won the race.
The 2007 Budeweiser Shootout is sure to be a charged affair with Denny Hamlin, the surprise winner of 2006 looking to repeat the performance and current crowd favourite Dale Earnhardt Jr looking to wrest the crown from him. With a purse of over a million at stake, the race is sure to be a closely contested one.
