Dodge Ram Tough 200 is a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race that takes place at Gateway International Raceway. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) was co founded by William H.G. France and Ed Otto in 1948 in the USA. The purpose was to organize and promote the sport of stock car racing on sanctioned high-speed oval circuits and a few road courses. While most tracks are ovals, others are tri-ovals, quad-ovals, triangular, or ovals with unequal ends. Race speeds vary widely based on the track. The fastest track is Talladega Superspeedway where the record race speed is 188 mph while the slowest tracks are Infineon Raceway and Martinsville Speedway. NASCAR sanctions over 1,500 races at over 100 tracks in 38 states and is the largest sanctioning body of motor sports in the US.
Craftsman Truck Series is the one of the largest series sanctioned by NASCAR along with the Busch Series, and the Nextel Cup. The Craftsman Truck Series started in 1996 and initially had several rules that differed from both the other series. Later, some of the rules were changed and some were adopted for the Busch Series. In the first year of the series, the circuits were of a mile in length or less and also two road courses. The road courses were phased out by 2001. Most of the first races were no longer than 125 miles in length, with 150 laps on short tracks. The races aired on ESPN, TNN, WTBS, ABC, and CBS. A number of races were held at tracks that hosted only NASCAR regional events.
Now, the circuits are around 250 miles and 200-250 laps around the shortest tracks. In 2001, the series was exclusively to be aired, first on ESPN, and later in 2003,on Speed Channel.
Last Season Preview: 2006
The 11th season for the series began on February 17, 2006 at Daytona International Speedway with the GM Flex Fuel 250, and would end on November 17, 2006 with the Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 was held on April 29th 2006 at Gateway International Raceway - Madison, IL. David Ragan started from the pole after rain cancelled qualifying for the day. The rain showers postponed practice and NASCAR opted to cancel qualifying so drivers could get time out on the track. The race was aired live on Speed Channel
Last season's event winner, Ted Musgrave, started alongside Ragan on the front row while Todd Bodine, David Reutimann and David Starr were at the top five starting positions. Todd Bodine won the event in 2006. Bodine drove the number 30 Lumber Liquidators/ Germain Toyota. The circuit was 200 miles long and had 160 laps.
