Annie is an orphan who lives in an orphanage, she is eternally optimistic and convinced that one day her parents will return and she'll be re-united with them after. The orphanage is awful, run by the drink sodden Miss Hannigan. Annie yearns to escape from the orphanage. Fatefully, She and her dog Sandy are placed in the lap of luxury for a week as a part of a publicity campaign for the rich and sometimes heartless Oliver Warbucks. Through a series of events, Warbucks eventually comes to like the girl and wants to adopt her. But Annie believes her parents are still alive. Warbucks then publicly announces that he will give a cash reward to her real parents. This leads to a plot to kidnap the girl by Miss Hannigan, Hannigan's brother Rooster, and his girlfriend Lily St. Regis.
The play debuted on Broadway in 1977 . It's original case consisted of Andrea McArdle, Dorothy Loudon, Reid Shelton, Sandy Faison, Robert Fitch and Barbara Erwin. It was directed by Alan Ross Kosher and written by Thomas Meehan. The music was composed by Charles Strouse and the lyrics were penned by Martin Charnin. Over the years it has been performed many times. The film version, made in 1982 by Columbia Pictures, starred Aileen Quinn as Annie, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan, Bernadette Peters as Lily, Ann Reinking as Grace, and Tim Curry as Rooster. It was directed by John Huston.
