Get ready to grab your tickets to see one the very best ballet companies in the whole world perform live! Ballet Nacional De Cuba has gained an international reputation for being one of the foremost dance companies in the world. The company is best known for the distinct Cuban flavor they bring to each of their dance productions, adding a spicy, passionate twist to their classical repertoire as well as bringing refreshing new interpretations to classical western ballet productions.
Ballet Nacional De Cuba was started in 1948 by the ballet virtuoso Alicia Alonso. Alonso had already established herself as the new prima donna darling of the ballet arena with her spectacular work in the American Ballet Theater but opted to go back to Cuba. Cuba already had a rich history of ballet, with Pavlova's interpretation Giselle in Havana in 1917. Cuban culture is one that is rich with dance of all kinds and Alonso looked to harnessing that richness into a company that would faithfully bring that distinct Cuban flavor to the stage.
Ballet Nacional De Cuba has since grown from strength to strength, bringing an incredibly passionate breed of ballet dancers to the fore who have carved a niche for themselves individually, as part of Ballet Nacional De Cuba and as members of other international ballet companies as well. Ballet Nacional De Cuba has over six hundred productions under its belt and has toured extensively, performing to widespread critical acclaim in over sixty countries across the globe. For the past forty years, the company has also hosted the International Ballet Festival of Havana, an extremely prestigious show that has consistently drawn the crème de la crème from the world of dance year after year.
This dynamic and magical ballet troupe was awarded Cuba's highest civil decoration Lazaro Pena Order on its fiftieth anniversary and Alonso was awarded with the prestigious Order for her work as well. Though Alonso is well into her eighties and nearly sightless, she still takes an active role in the creation and choreography of the company's many productions.
