Bernarda Alba is a story of heroism, struggle and determination in the face of adverse situations. It speaks of a human spirit with a zeal that can overcome any obstacle in life.

Written by Michael John LaChiusa Bernarda Alba has all the things that a perceptive audience might wish. A serious and seamless musicalization by Federico Garcia Lorca's masterpiece, The House of Bernarda Alba is a seductive staging by Graciela Daniele. A passionate, definitive version by its all-female cast, vivid tragedy of sexual repression, director's grasp of rhythms of theatrical language and his Gothic sensuality make its tickets a hot item to get.

'The House of Bernarda Alba' (La casa de Bernarda Alba) is a Spanish play by the Spanish that is part of Lorca's Rural Trilogy. Written in 1936, it was first performed in 1945. The play shows the events of an Andalusian house. The title character (aged 60) wields complete control over her five daughters Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio and Adele. The housekeeper and Bernard's mother also live there. The deliberate non-existence of any male character is to build up the high level of sexual stress present throughout the play. The play looks at themes of suppression, passion, and conformity. It explores the effects of men upon women. It speaks of a mother's cruel tyranny over daughters. Michael John LaChiusa converted the play into musical form, in 2006.

Bernarda Alba is remarkably lively even if the show is so dark-spirited. The credit largely goes to the extraordinary characters. Daniele marshaled with flair through her blend of movement and dance. The excellent and multiethnic ensemble, though doesn't resemble a family, yet it puts it's acting like one. Beautiful poem tones make the drama more lively and emotional. It speaks of odds and creates a resolve to overcome them. It resurrects the fascist tyranny with zeal to fight against it in the characters.
