A hugely popular play by the well-known author of Educating Rita, Blood Brothers, is a fast moving perceptive musical, which is entertaining in its entirety, thought provoking, funny, and at the end ultimately tragic. Hailed by the critics as 'the greatest musical of the decade'; it is a story of twin brothers who are born to a large working class family. The musical takes an interesting look at the caste system in England while carefully studying the human element that creates it. The tale is essentially one of adoption, where the mother gives up one of the boys for adoption. The musical then traces the differences and conflicts arising through the life of the brothers' vis-à-vis upbringing and their relationships with their mothers, real & adopted. At the foreground of the play is the bond between the brothers themselves. This enthralling story has captivated the minds of theatre lovers across all ages and now is in a city/venue near you. So get your hand on the tickets for the show and go on an emotional roller coaster ride fuelled by music.
Premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse in January 1983, it still continues to have a hugely successful West End run today. It is an unrivalled musical classic that has kept the applause going even after two decades. The melodic play is seeped in the maelstrom of class, fate, childhood, adolescence, surrogacy, superstition, humour, & tragedy. Willy Russell's Blood Brothers is the quintessential, rich boy, poor boy friendship tales, with a twist. The two friends are brothers, separated at birth. Told with great gentleness, darkness and joy this musical is at one time heartbreaking and the very next hilarious.
Set in Liverpool in the 1960's era, the musical moves with the separation of twin brothers at birth as their working-class mother is too poor to keep them both and giving one of the boys to her well-off but childless employer, the latter passing the baby off as her own child. Life seems to go on, but while the surface looks smooth and happy, the narrator starts scratching it and starts bringing about a darker and more sinister tone to the story, reminding the audience constantly that the progression of events is not natural and the end would be disastrous rather than happy.
The musical requires a superb combination of characters, which can do justice to the central theme and the storyline, and the lead actors do so with aplomb. The narrator plays the main part of taking the audience into an enthralling witty humour as well the sequence of ups & downs of the story. The pace at which the tale moves is what glues the audience to the seats. Only a handful of musicals have achieved such acclaim of scooping four awards for the best musical and standing ovations at almost every performance from the past 12 years. Through its inherent Englishness, it has managed to give Liverpool a place in the history of English musicals. With a record breaking Broadway run and a successful coast-to-coast US tour it has been nominated for 7 Tony awards. 'Blood brothers' is truly a smash hit and unforgettable.
This itself speaks volumes not only about the story line but also the whole effort behind such a great act. With tickets in short supply and people queuing up to buy them, you need to hurry!!!
