If you are in the mood to see some stellar American drama by one of the nation's greatest playwrights, then you need to get your tickets to see the award winning Tennessee Williams play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Undoubtedly one of Williams' greatest works, the play explores the tapestry of truth and falsehoods that a family weaves about itself and the resolutions that occur when those falsehoods need to be addressed. As with much of Williams' work, the play is set in the decaying opulence of Southern society.

The play revolves around a young couple, Maggie and Brick who come down to the family estate in Mississippi for Bricks' father, Big Daddy's, birthday. As with many of Williams' plays, there is a veneer of beauty that shatters all too easily, revealing a corrupt and hollow inside- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is no different. The beautiful young couple proves to actually be made of a desperate but beautiful young woman who has pulled herself out of poverty into the arms of an empty marriage. Brick is a soured hero, former football hero now a drunk who has never been able to recover from the suicide of his best friend Skipper.

Williams' weaves a complicated tapestry of lies here- everyone is lying to everyone else. Brick and Maggie lie to the family that they are having a baby, Maggie lies to Big Daddy to win his favor, Brick lies to Maggie about his feelings. The play comes to resolution of sorts when Brick has an eye-opening conversation with his father that finally forces him to be truthful about his feelings and his life. There has been speculation that Brick is in fact dealing with repressed feelings of homosexuality but that is never fully explored in the play, though it is a very plausible theme.

The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955 and was adapted to the screen starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman in the lead. Both the film and the play were extremely successful and the play is often revived not only because it is such a masterpiece but because it is a challenging piece of work for any actor to prove their worth.
