Their common admiration for variety and multiculturism brought Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson together to create Complexions. Their idea was to bring together artists from various disciplines and showcase a variety of talents and innovation. The proposal was first charted out in 1994 and was christened Complexions.At a time when no other dance company was doing well, their show was a sell-out and the premiere, which was in New York, was applauded by all. Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Swayze presented the show. It was appreciated for the fine performance as well as excellent choreography.

Complexions has made optimum use of their reservoir of talent with the extraordinary choreography, which derives inspiration from the classical dance forms. They have effectively used this platform of dance to showcase the times, present and past along with contemporary social conditions and human emotions.Complexions received the prestigious New York Times Critics Choice Award in 1995. The troupe got invited to perform at various dance competitions like, the Grand Pas Moscow Ballet Festival, Steps International Dance Festival etc.

Complexions has put up a performance across America, Australia, Europe and Asia.They also set up a dance-training academy called READY, SET. DANCE! in 2002 to cater to the needs of youth in cities where the Complexions has a base. They have programs at various levels to suit the experience level of the learner.Complexions roster saw the coming in of stars like Carmen de Lavallade and Gus Solomons Jr. Ailey dancer Sarita Allen also brought fame to the academy and is still remembered for her performance in Earth, Wind, & Fire, Higher Ground.

Rhoden's inspiration is every dancer. His passion and love for the art is seen in the series of solo performances and duets depicting both form and texture of performance of an individual.Coordinating with Richardson, Rhoden has finessed a style that incorporates a variety of forms including Ailey Africanisms. He has included extreme rapid movements along with delicate body forms.The style might look fanatic to some but it does have elements of complexity and finesse. The moves are ecstatic and appealing to both eyes and mind. It's like a 3-D movie and is exciting like a baseball game. Physical movements and speed mark the work of Rhoden.Some people do note an affinity between William Forsythe and Rhoden. It can boast of having pulled a new genre of audience. It's an evolution of various dance forms and is a gift to the world of dance.
