One of the major attractions this season is the premiere of "Convenience" a musical family drama. Based on a book by Gregg Coffin it's a young man's musical, he has written the music and lyrics for the play as well. This new musical shows a single mom and her son who have surprising news for each other: the ladies is remarrying and add to that the boy has a boyfriend. But neither of them can find the words nor the courage to tell the other person about this. During the one funny, awkward and touching week that goes by, they come to realize that the things they feared would throw them apart end up bringing them closer and closer.

"Convenience" is a musical about family; it's about the ties that bind us and the ones we are always struggling to break. The play has a youthful perspective in the story as well as the engaging way of narrating the story. The music is through-composed and blossom into memorable tunes. The performances are praiseworthy and create an impact on the audience. The plot as it is emotional and the added drama enhances the audience's interest in the play.

The play features a small 5 person cast and includes people like Susan Brodin as Liz (mother) and J.C. Lippold as Vince (son). The remaining cast includes Shaun Nathan Baer, Alison Mary Forbes and Duane Johnson. Steven J. Meerdink directs the play in the right direction with some appreciable musical direction by Kevin Hansen, the music coordinator for the play.

The music is quick and extremely catchy; the numbers played are melodic, highly theatrical and praiseworthy. The play effectively mixes humor and tension, but in the end proves to be witty and sincere. Some of the reasons why "Convenience" was chosen to be a part of the 2000 festival of new musicals brought by the national alliance for musical theatre.

The audiences are bound to be emotion struck, crying, laughing and cheering. The experience of the play is life affirming and touchy. The appeal of the play is universal and creates an emotional magic. The portrayal of the interaction of these characters (the mother and son) is very effective and shows how communication is still a very effective tool for any relationship.

It makes a deep connection with audience and people relate to it instantly. If you go by the people's verdict this is one play you should see with your family.
