Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell founded it in the year 1969; Dance Theatre of Harlem was considered as an exceptionally fascinating and probably ballet's among the most delightful and exhilarating undertakings". Brusquely after the assassination Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mitchell was stimulated to start a school that would present children - especially among those who reside in the area near Harlem, the society in which he was born - the chance to learn about dance and the allied arts. The Dance Theatre of Harlem School continues to present training to more than 1,000 young people yearly through pre-professional and professional dance programs. The school also offers a program unlock to any child who wants to study dance and pursue postgraduate programs in dance. Dancing through Barriers, which incidentally is Dance Theatre of Harlem's community and education outreach program, brings whole of arts education programs to young energetic people in community and school centers all over the globe.

DTHS has grown upto a registration of over 650 students per year, and developed an excusive curriculum that, in addition to ballet and tap also has included modern African and jazz dance, karate, gymnastics, Irish step dancing, and even tai- chi. Other classes include dance history and music theory. Classes are offered in 3 programs (Community, Pre-Professional, and Community) during the fall and spring semesters, for all levels of ages from 3 to 24 years.

Celebrating its anniversary season, Dance Theatre of Harlem brought its usual novelty, pizzazz and very exceptional dancers of different colors, hues and cultures. A high-quality series! Performing onstage, the ebullient Soweto String Quartet (includes a violist, cellist, and two talented violinists as well as a multi-instrument percussionist and tabla player) will be performing this season.
