Defending the Caveman is a humorous yet thought provoking play by Rob Becker. It is a comical look at the gap between the sexes.
What makes men and women so different? Becker takes us back to our primal roots to answer these questions. The caveman was a hunter and focused on his prey until he lanced it with his spear. The cave woman was a gatherer, she gathered things that could be used in her cave. He then shows the audience how men/women behavior in today's fast paced world relates to those primal principles.
Chris Sullivan plays the role of the middle class "Caveman"to the tilt. He has a nice sense of timing and knows how to engage the audience while smoothly keeping them captivated.. Essentially, Defending the Caveman explores what it means to be a man in normal middle class American society. Becker portrays the men as "assholes," or he believes women depict us in that light. He explains in vivid detail how men are hunters and focus on a single idea or task at a time. Women, conversely, are gathers who relish conversation, multitasking and togetherness.
Men, according to Becker, bond by sharing long periods of silence, punctuated by calling each other obscene names, whereas women bond by gossiping, processing, sharing emotional insights.Defending The Caveman has witty catalogs and the projects instantly the recognizable traits that differentiate the sexes. But the underlying message that Becker wants to communicate is that out of all these differences, springs the potential for bridge-building rather than potential warfare.
Defending the Caveman has been extremely popular with the masses and delivers enough laughs as it especially appeals to women. Still, "Defending the Caveman" holds the record of the longest-running solo play in Broadway history, beating out Lily Tomlin's "Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe" and Jackie Mason's "The World According to Me." John Gray, author of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" described the show as "Absolutely brilliant! Caveman should be seen by anyone who wants to understand the opposite sex."
