Buy Der Rosenkavalier tickets online now.Der Rosenkavalier is Richard Strauss' best loved comic opera. Sung in German, Der Rosenkavalier was premiered in Dresden on 26 January 1911. Librettist Hugo Von Hofmannstha suggested Richard to create a "Viennese comedy". Richard, who wanted to write another tragic opera decided on a romantic comedy "in the style of Figaro".
Strauss dictates Der Rosenkavalier in three acts- as a story of thwarted love through the characters of the middle-aged, married Marschallin (32) and her teenage lover Octavian(17). Their affair is complicated when marschallin's cousin, Baron Ochs, announces his intention to wed the beautiful innocent, Sophie and marschallin sends Octavian in the guise of the Knight of the rose to present a silver betrothal rose to Sophie, on behalf of Baron for announcing the proposal. Trouble starts when lovely young Sophie and Octavian fall head-over-heels in love in their first meeting.
This means Baron must be thwarted. Sophie's angry father sends her to convent. But Octavian wouldn't give up so easily. He plans out a scheme to win her hand. However, he steps back when Baron arrives to be presented to Sophie. Baron's impudent manners disgust Sophie & she turns to Octavia for help. He promises not to let her marry the Baron. This leads to comic confusion. Baron, on realizing the farce being pulled on him takes it in good humor and tries to slip out unnoticed. Now, Sophie, Octavian, and the Marschallin are left alone. The last Act though emphasizing every element of the comic has a touching conclusion. In the emotional climax of the opera when the marschallin realizes that the real act of love is to give up Octavian is one of the most sublime moments in the opera. She encourages him to follow his heart and love Sophie. The curtain closes on Octavian and Sophie.
This exquisite 18th century fairy-story continues to delight audiences & critics alike. The plot has been enacted beautifully .The choice of actors has added to the brilliance of the plot. It is a must watch for all you opera fans out there.
