If you are looking for some truly rib-tickling comedy that has a healthy dose of drama thrown in as well, then get your friends together and grab your tickets to see the play Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Written by the very talented Tyler Perry, the movie follows the journey of a woman whose life is turned around and with the help of her faith, family and friends she learns to find the courage to move on with her life on her own terms. The play was also made into a very successful movie staring Kimberly Elise.
The play follows the events that occur in the life of Helen McCarter. Helen seems to be living a charmed life- she is married to a successful man and lives in a sprawling mansion complete with swimming pools and tennis courts. Her married life to Charles seems perfect- Helen has been a faithful and loving wife and the pair seems to be all smiles, driving around in fancy cars wearing beautiful clothes. It's a dream come true and Helen is definitely living it.
But this dream life comes crashing down around her after their 18th wedding anniversary when her husband suddenly announces that he wants a divorce. What's worse, he wants her out of the house immediately so that his mistress can move in. Perhaps the most thoughtful thing he does for her is to load up all her things in a moving truck so that she can be on her way immediately.
Devastated and hurt, Helen cries uncontrollably and heads to the only place that she can think of- her grandmother's house. On the way, the truck driver Orlando strikes a chord with his decent and loving manner, which is in striking contrast to Charles.
Helen finds a great deal of comfort in her friends and family as she tries to put the pieces of her life back together as well as decide what to do with her future. She is greatly helped in this process by Grandma Madea- Madea is a large, gun-slinging, weed-smoking towering specimen of a woman who gives Helen a tremendous amount of help and support. More importantly, she helps Helen see the comedy in even this tragic part of her life. Not to mention she goes over to Charles' house and takes a chainsaw to the furniture which is not something every grandmother will do!
The story also has its moments of drama when Helen recounts how her life with Charles was an abusive one and perhaps this is her chance to start a new life afresh. Helen also finds her faith being tested when she wonders whether she can find the strength in her heart to forgive Charles when he tells her he has reformed and repents what he has done.
