Get ready to see the next phase in the evolution of modern dance that will forever change your perspective on the world around you- come get your tickets to see the Diavolo Dance Company perform live on stage. The Diavolo Dance Company has been hailed by many as being a pioneering force in the evolution of modern dance as we know it.
The company was founded in 1992 by choreographer Jacques Heim. Born in Paris, Heim received his master's degree in dance at the California Institute of Arts and went on to found Diavolo in an attempt to redefine dance through form and expression as well as use dance as a tool to reassess the relationship we share with various inanimate objects in our environment.
The troupe consists of ten members and they currently have around a dozen pieces in their company repertoire. Diavolo's specialty is experimentation with space and objects as they relate to dance. Accordingly in their shows you will often see huge props such as doors built with a surrealistic effect. These props remain stationary with the dancers using them as the foundations for the piece and their own movements.
The dancers themselves often appear to defy gravity- they are an eclectic mixture of dancers, athletes and gymnasts who spin and sail through the air with the greatest of ease, eliciting gasps of wonder and surprise from even the most jaded of modern dance critics. The dancers push the boundaries of the human body, exploiting its form and fluidity to add a rich dimension to the pieces that are performed.
Heim himself has been fascinated with the relationships that humans have built for themselves over the years- relationships that he believes are greatly influenced by the environment. He illustrates this point with his comparison of Paris and Los Angeles. Paris seems like a more people-friendly society whereas Los Angeles seems to be built on the concept of isolation and privacy. People work in cubicles, live in apartments and drive small cars- unlike Paris the interaction with society is at a minimum.
Heim is also interested in the use of everyday objects that many of us take for granted. Doors for example, are fascinating as they open onto different things, they lead to other places. Other props like staircases and cages also play a part in his work, with the dancers interacting with the objects in ways that are both theatrical yet familiar.
The Diavolo Dance Company has received a number of awards over the years and much critical acclaim for its innovative work. Now you too can experience the magic of Diavolo live. Get to your online ticket vendor now and order your tickets to see the Diavolo Dance Company!
