Don Juan was a legendary fictional libertine, whose story has been told many times in different ways by different authors. Most agree that Don Juan is based on a legendary 17th century Spanish nobleman Don Juan Tenorio. The name is sometimes used as a synonym for "seducer".

The legends states that Don Juan has a pathological need to seduce each and every woman he encounters. His life turns upsie down when he seduced a young girl (Doña Ines) of a noble family, and kills her father (Don Fernando). Later, he comes across a statue of the father in a cemetery and impiously invites it home to dine with him, an invitation which the statue gladly accepts. The ghost of the father arrives for dinner as the bringer of Don Juan's death. The Statue asks to shake Don Juan's hand, and when he extends his arm, he drags him into hell.

Depending upon the interpretation of the legend, Don Juan's character may be presented in many ways, as the villain or the hero or maybe something in between. According to some critics, Don Juan was a simple, lustful womanizer, he was a cruel seducer who simply wanted sex, whenever he wanted and wherever he wanted. Others say Don Juan was a man who genuinely loved each woman that he seduced, and it was his gift to see the true beauty and inert values that exist in every woman.

The story of Don Juan has inspired many books, paintings, plays, opera's and movies. Such is the appeal of the character of Don Juan, that it has been told and retold in so many mediums. One of the mos famous adaptations has been Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni" which was written in 1787. Another literary version of the legend was Jose Zorilla's "Don Juan Tenorio" in 1844. In 1995, Don Juan was given a more modern incarnation the movie, "Don Juan deMarco" starring Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando.
