Elixir of Love is a comical opera by the famous opera composer Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti.

The main character in Elixir of Love of love are Nemorino, Adina, Sergeant Belcore and Dr. Dulcamara.

In the play Nemorino is a young, shy and simple farmer. He loves the wealthy country girl Adina. But Adina does not care about his love and constantly rejected Nemorino's love. Adina is reading about Queen Isolde's love potion, seating apart from the group of harvesters. Nemorino thinks how to win the love of Adina as he finds her more wonderful and better than him.

Suddenly a drum is heard and a unit of soldiers enters the village lead by dashing and bombastic sergeant Belcore. Belcore is attracted towards Adina proposes her for marriage. In spite of Belcore's arrogance and self assurances Adina is flattered by him. But for his marriage proposal Adina asks some time for thinking. Nemorino feels very jealous and after everyone had left, he begs Adina for her love but all in vain.

In the next scene enters a quack Dr. Dulcamara. He starts praising his wonderful remedy which he says can cure all ills. Nemorino is impressed by Dulcamara and asks him if he sells Queen Isolde's love potion. Dulcamara gives him the potion but instructs him that potion will only be effective after 24 hours and not to tell anyone about it. Nemorino becomes confident of getting his love now and tells Adina that now all his love problems will be cured in one day. Adina could not bear this and tells Belcore hat they will get married in next six days. Nemorino does not feel threatened as he is confident that Adina will come to him only. However Belcore gets a message to leave the village next morning, preponing the marriage to that very day. Nemorino is now worried while Adina invites everyone to the marriage feast.

The marriage feast takes place at Adina's farm with Dr Dulcamara being one of the guest. But in the absence of Nemorino, Adina hesitates in signing the marriage contract as she feels her revenge won't be complete without him. Nemorino asks for help from Dalcamara who advices to take another dose of his remedy. Unfortunately Nemorino has no money left with him now and is given some time by the doctor to arrange for the money. Belcore offers help to him Nemorino by getting enroll himself in his army. Nemorino agrees to Belcore with the hope that he will be able win his love Adina.

But luck strikes for Nemorino as news spreads in the village that Nemorino has just inherited a large fortune from his rich dead uncle and he becomes popular among the village girls. Adina is stunned with his popularity while Dulcamara tells her about the potion. As she hears about Nemorino being enlisted in the army she realizes her love for him. She brings back the papers of enlistment from Belcore and confesses her love to Nemorino. Nemorino finally gets the love of his life while Dulcamara becomes extremely famous in the village and is blessed by everyone before leaving the village.
