Altered & adapted by Arrigo Boito, Falstaff is an classical opera & commedia lirica in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, from Shakespeare's play "The Merry Wives of Windsor".Giuseppe Verdi took the form of opera to new heights of drama and musical expression. Falstaff was Verdi's last opera. It was written in the composer's eighth decade. Though Verdi's style and musical persona were of an entirely different cast, partisans perceive him as at least the equal of Wagner. Falstaff was only the second comedy opera out of his twenty six compositions. It was also the third of Verdi's operas to be based on a Shakespearean play. It acquired and concluded with a fugue, the famous "Tutto nel mondo è burla" ("All the world's a joke") just like his first adaptation of the English playwright. Falstaff was first performed at La Scala in Milan, Italy on February 9, 1893. The show attained enormous success.
