The musical "Fanny Hill" is the story of a beautiful but poor young girl who moves to London to make her fortune but ends up making a great deal more.

This musical is modified by Ed Dixon which is based on notoriously naughty eighteenth century novel Fanny Hill -- Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure written by John Cleland in 1749. The book was banned for its obscenity and Cleland was arrested for writing this book. Still the book was sold underground and made its way to US. In 1963, the book was published by G. B. Putnam and it was once again banned for obscenity. The publisher challenged the ban in court, and in a landmark decision in 1966, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Memoirs v. Massachusetts that the banned novel did not meet the standard for obscenity. This book has become famous more for its battle against censorship than its content. Many films have been made on the basis of "Fanny Hill" though none of them could hit the floors.

This book has inspired Ed Dixon who is making its Off-Broadway debut in the form of a musical. With the intrepid support of Ed Dixon for the new musicals, The York Theater Company, giving "Fanny Hill" an atypically extravagantly staged productions. This musical has a cast of nine, the most accomplished performers of theater with Broadway credits. Nancy Anderson who can claim the adjective adorable as her very own is leading this musical drama. Anderson is not just an attractive and sensual looking blonde in this musical, but a versatile actress too who has got a gorgeous, magical and treble voice. The musical has the actors who extend their roles to doubles to do ensemble duty. David Cromwell can be taken as the first example who lustfully plays all except one of the clients who visit Mrs. Brown and her "ladies of pleasure." The masochistic Mr. Barville, is another pleasure seeker who played to the hilt by Michael J. Farina who also doubles as a greedy landlord named Mr. Sneed. Anderson is playing as an innocent young girl who is in search of her fortune and true love whereas Patti Allison has been casted as the opportunistic, sturdy Mrs. Brown and the members of her household include Christiane Tisdale as Fanny's old friend Phoebe, Emily Skinner as Martha the maid, Gina Ferral as Esther, a big girl who is playing another role of a cross-dressing countess and becomes Count Brodski. As Candide had to endure separation from his beloved, so must Fanny. The role of Fanny's beloved is played by a another well performer Tony Yazbeck, a sailor whose name is Charles Waneigh. Another character in the musical is Will Plenty played by Adam Monley who help Fanny in relieving her boredom as a rich nobelman's country mistress.

The plot is having some wonderful melodies,solos and duets in the musical. Its usual and natural that all tasks created by a creator, are not executed with equal success. The lyrics are not on a par with the music in Dixon's case. Patti Allison's Mrs. Brown is gifted with the lyric that best captures the tongue-in-cheek in a show-stopping second act song titled "Every Man in London,". Fanny's "Honor Lost" is another of the wittier lyrics specifically "Honor lost so this is honor lost ,I had no idea that one day I'd be a woman degraded my dignity traded for money just for biscuit and honey It's really quite funny ".

"Fanny Hill" in the form of musical is a great step taken by Ed Dixon and proved its worth by wonder direction by James Brennan. The star cast has performed their roles perfectly and lived the characters. Its a deep meaning story of a girl mixed with comedy and music that has achieved its aim of winning over the people.
