Festen, a David Eldridge dark comedy play which is derived from the 1998 Dogme film, is one of the famous plays of its time.The play opens with the celebrations of Patriarch Helge Klingelfeldt's 60th birthday at his beautiful old house in the Danish countryside. All the family members including his loyal wife, daughter Helene, sons Christian and Michael and several of his friends can be sen standing around him. The occasion is considered to an auspicious one.

But, as the sun sets the eldest son of the family, Christian raises a toast to his father and breaks down the silence by attending all the other guests of the party.
