The characters in Guys & Dolls are named Arvide Abernathy, Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Benny Southstreet, Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Sister Sarah Brown, Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Miss Adelaide, and Big Jule.

The story is centered around Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Sister Sarah Brown, and Miss Adelaide. It is story about small anti social elements and professional gamblers living in New York. Nathan Detroit earns his bread and butter through a "floating crap game" but is not legal. The women is his life is a singer in night club Miss Adelaide. Both have been engaged for last fourteen years. Nathan Detroit soon finds himself in deep trouble as his floating game is facing the danger of being close down due to police action. He finds a new venue for his business a Biltmore garage. He can only establish his game here after giving $1000 deposit money to the owner of the garage.
His requirement for money leads him to meet a gambler named Sky Masterson. Nathan bets with Masterson and challenges him to take for dinner a sister of Save a Soul Mission, Sarah Brown. Nathan is assured of the bet that Masterson will definitely loose this bet. But the problems of Nathan only multiplies when he comes to know that Masterson has succeeded in taking Sarah Brown for dinner. Love blossoms between Sarah and Materson in the date.

The first Broadway production of Guys & Dolls was on 24th November, 1950 at 46th Street Theatre. It received a Tony Award in 1952.
The songs in the musical are I'll Know, Take Back Your Mink, Runyonland, Crapshooters' Ballet, The Oldest Established, If I Were A Bell, More I Cannot Wish You, Follow the Fold, My Time of Day, Marry the Man Today, A Bushel and a Peck, I've Never Been in Love Before, Guys and Dolls, Fugue for Tinhorns.

Guys & Dolls has been to United Kingdom as well being performed at London Coliseum on 28th May, 1953. The show was very successful with 555 performances.
Guys & Dolls was revived in 1976. It was played on 31st July, 1976 at Broadway Theatre giving 239 performances. The cast was all black and Danny Holgate and Horace Ott were the music arrangers.
The musical had a major revival in 1982 in London at Royal National Theatre. The director for the revival was Richard Eyre. Laurence Olivier wanted to portray the role of Nathan Detroit but was unable to perform the role as he was suffering from illness. The roles were performed by Julie Covington as Sarah Brown, Nathan Detroit by Bob Hoskins, as Sky, Miss Adelaide by Julia McKenzie.
