The story of Hair is about the hippies. In its original performance Hair was presented with the cast members totally naked in some parts of the musical. It was also famous for its music. Books and lyrics were penned down by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. Galt MacDermot composed the music.

Hair opened as an Off Broadway at Public Theater on 17th October, 1967. The opening got a great response from the audience and has never looked back since then. At an old discotheque called The Cheetah, Hair was played for 45 times. At the Biltmore Theatre Hair registered the first Broadway opening on 29th April, 1968 . Hair did not stopped at Biltmore Theatre before giving 1873 performances. More successful performances were given in United Kingdom. At Shaftesbury Theatre in London Hair had the first performance on 27th September, 1968. It did not closed down before giving 1998 performances. It was only closed down as the roof of Shaftesbury Theatre collapsed in 1973.

There are seven main characters in Hair who are Dionne, Woof, Hud, Jeanie, Sheila, Claude, and Crissy. It is story about group of hippies active in politics and have long hair. This hippie group is refereed as The Tribe. The Tribe does not agree for the mobilization for the ongoing Vietnam War. Berger and Claude do not agree for the draft notice of Claude. Berger and Claude are shown pals in the musical. There is Sheila who love both Berger and Claude. But her busy political career does not allow her to show her love. Berger and Claude are unable to win the fight. He goes to Vietnam as he realizes that tribe life isn't meant for him.

Hair was not only popular for it story and performances but also due to some great music. The Off Broadway production had many successful songs like Going Down, Where Do I Go?, Black Boys, Red Blue and White, Dead End, Easy to Be Hard, Good Morning Starshine, Electric Blues, White Boys, Hare Krishna, Ain't Got No,
Opening, Sentimental Ending, Hare Krishna, Frank Mills, Walking in Space, I Got Life.

The Broadway production had more successful numbers such as Sodomy, I'm Black, Manchester England, Three-Five-Zero-Zero, Walking in Space, What a Piece of Work Is Man, Good Morning Starshine,Oh Great God of Power, Electric Blues, I Believe in Love, Colored Spade, Going Down, Easy to Be Hard, Where Do I Go?, My Conviction, Ain't Got No Grass, Be-In (Hare Krishna), Don't Put It Down, Frank Mills, Ain't Got No, White Boys, The Bed, Hashish, Initials (L.B.J), Aquarius, Abie Baby, Black Boys.

In New York some superb performance were given by a talented bunch of actors portraying the each character up to perfection. The actors were James Rado, Kim Milford, Diane Keaton., Shelley Plimpton, Paul Jabara, Gerome Ragni, and Melba Moore.
The London production cast was played by Richard O'Brien, Elaine Paige, Paul Nicholas, Marsha Hunt, Paul Korda, Tim Curry, Sonja Kristina, Melba Moore, and Alex Harvey.
