Dr Dorothy. I. Height, an icon and personality in the civil rights activism, is a mentor of Martin Luther King Jr. She is already 93 years old but is still going strong with no signs
of slowing down. This time she has given inspiration to a new venue: a toe tapping musical of "passion, power and triumph". If this hat could talk is the name of the inspired musical depicting Height's stalwart eloquence and elegant headwear!
The show has been playing very well. It has attracted the attention of young and old alike. For the younger folk whose knowledge of the civil rights movement comes just from books this play is both informative and enjoyable. The foot tapping music has clicked with the new generation. The apprehensions cast by some people about the play not made for the young have been washed away. It is a story that must resonate with our youth, most of whom have neither idea of the lives lost nor the hard work done by those who fought for this generation to be free.
The story of the play starts with the march of 1963 in Washington and tells about the life of height's life and his activities. Other famous characters include Mary McLeod Bethune, A. Philip Randolph. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Directed and choreographed by George W. Faison, a Tony Award winner Joe Coleman lead vocalist of The Platters -- wrote the music and lyrics. Coleman performs in the musical as well. Grammy winner Stephanie Mills portrays Dr Height. Melodies that touch the heart of mankind, chants that convey the changes that were resonating throughout the country, coupled with hymns that leave you with zeal to work for a better day, all in all a highly entertaining as well as enlightening performance with excellent music and nostalgic emotions. Stories like these need to be told again and again to our young people today. It's a must watch for all of us and should even get tickets for our kids so that they are enlightened by this absorbing play.
