At the Adam Mickiewicz University, Jan A.P. Kaczmarek studied law. In the late 1970 he worked with Theater Laboratory of Jerzy Grotowski. In 1977 Orchestra of the Eighth Day was created by Kaczmarek. His first major break came in a theater in the United States Of America. He gave many superb compositions for many productions at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and Goodman theater Chicago. He composed the music for "Tis Pity She's A Whore" of John Ford in 1992 for which he was awarded with Obie and a Drama Desk Award. Val Kilmer.
According to Jan A.P. Kaczmarek he learned a lot from Jerzy Grotowski. Today he loves to compose and play music. On his website he says " Playing and composing was like a religion for me and then it became a profession." In the late years of 1970 The Orchestra of the Eighth Day started to tour Europe. The Orchestra was also very successful which till now has eighteen major tours to its name. It has performed at many prestigious venue and festivals like in London it played at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Czechoslovakia it played at the International Music Festival and Venice Biennale. In Amsterdam its venue was VPRO Radio International Contemporary Music Festival. Kaczmarek in Czechoslovakia for the best competition won the Golden Spring Prize. In 1982 The Orchestra of the Eighth Day had its first tour of America. After the tour Kaczmarek recorded his first album titled ' Music for the End'. It was released on a major record label of Chicago, Flying Fish Records.
In 1989 Jan A.P. Kaczmarek came back to United States of America. After giving successful compositions for theater in Poland, he continued with his great work in the theaters of America also. In 1992 he named to himself two New York theater awards. Kaczmarek had already earned a name for himself as a successful film composer in Poland and in USA also he was attracted towards film composition. His desire let him to compose many beautiful scores for many American movies like "The Third Miracle", "Washington Square", "Lost Souls","Total Eclipse", "Quo Vadis", "Aimée & Jaguar", "Bliss","Edges of the Lord", and "Unfaithful."
The greatest moment for the career of Jan A.P. Kaczmarek came when for the movie "Finding Neverland." he got his first Oscar Award for Best Original Score. He also won the Best Score of the Year award by The National Review Board in addition being nominate for a Golden Globe award.
