Kiss Me Kate has enthralled critics and delighted audiences since its first original production which opened in 1948 through to its recent revival. The plot of Kiss Me Kate was incidentally inspired by the numerous on-and-off-stage battles between the married theatrical stars, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. The narcissistic performer Fred Graham is made to reunite with his previous wife Lilli Vanessi in the principal roles of Petruchio and Kate in the play "Taming of the Shrew". Constantly throughout the show they fight each other and noticeably still love each other. In the meantime, due to an unfortunate mistaken identity, two gangsters try to harass Fred. In addition, two former cabaret artists cast in Taming of the Shrew, namely struggle very hard to keep their sagging romance alive. All this in a hilarious tone provides for delectable viewing pleasure.
Kiss Me Kate is the pinnacle of Cole Porter's very long and exceedingly fruitful career as a composer par excellence for the musical theatre. It is a play within a play and the only one of his musical production to exceed an over a thousand performances on Broadway. In addition it is also the only one to be staged around the world in over a dozen translations across several countries.
After viewing Kiss Me Kate I believe it is an absolute triumph and wonderful achievement for the cast and crew, an entertaining, quality and enthralling musical. The setting was proficiently designed with an appealing variety of levels, and artistic lighting. The singing before a live audience was of a consistently of high quality throughout.. It is hard not to make special mention of the impeccable comic timing of the gangsters as they truly awestruck the audience. In addition, the chorus and all the dancers provided admirable support to the production. The entire show and the dancing was well choreographed and of an outstanding standard. The orchestra was superbly conducted with a predominantly strong lead violin and hard-hitting brass. Viewing Kiss Me Kate was a great realization and a remarkable night of whole some entertainment. The play is brilliantly formulated and has enough action for every member of the family. All in all it's a must watch for everybody. So before the tickets are all gone, do book yours online!
