It's time to book your tickets to see a comedy that is all set to take the American theater circuit by storm, just like it took the London theater scene by storm. Get set to get your tickets to see the brand new comedy from across the pond called Losing Louie. Written by English playwright Simon Mendes Da Costa and directed by Jerry Zaks, the play is guaranteed to put a stitch in your side with its wickedly funny take on what happens during a funeral.
Our main man Louie has lived a full but licentious life and in this play, the audience is alternately shown his exploits in life and what became of them fifty years later at his funeral. Da Costa chose a funeral since he was inspired by the funeral of his own grandmother. Despite being a somber event, everyone was drinking, laughing, swapping stories and memories and enjoying each other's company. Losing Louie attains that same level of opposites but with hilarious results.
In this case, the funeral also brings two rivaling siblings face to face. The eldest sibling Tony is a bitter man, especially when it comes to his younger brother Reggie who is a wealthier, more successful man than Tony. Egged on by his wife Amanda, Tony begins to have it out with Reggie in the bedroom and the result is a barrage of family secrets, skeletons and ricochets that shatter across a gap of fifty years.
The play is directed by four time Tony winner Jerry Zaks whose other plays include Guys and Dolls and Six Degrees of Separation. Though this is only Da Costa's second play, the playwright has already garnered a huge amount of critical and commercial success across the globe- the future certainly looks bright for Da Costa and Losing Louie.
